International Medical Graduates - Partially Comparable Doctors

A Partially Comparable Doctor (see below) is a Doctor assessed as being at the level of an Australian trained advanced trainee in general practice but requires further training / supervised practice and assessment to be regarded as fully comparable. In general, such GPs would be expected to have around five years experience as a GP (please visit the Australian Medical Council for more information).

You MAY be eligible to register through the Specialist Pathway to work in Canberra, ACT if you hold the following qualifications:

Canada Certificate in Family Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) pre 1992
Denmark Specialist Certificate in Family Medicine
Netherlands Netherlands Certificate of Specific Training for General Practice
Norway Certificate of Specific Training for General Medical Practice
Singapore Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
South Africa Registration as a Family Physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) (formerly South African Medical and Dental Council) OR Master of Family Medicine OR Master or Master of Prax Medicine OR Member of The College of Family Practitioners of the South African College of General Practice (FSACGP).
Sweden Certificate of Specific Training for General Practice
UK Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) OR holding the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP) Certificate OR holding Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) qualification
USA Certificate of the American Board of Family Practice (ABFM)

 

Doctors holding qualifications not listed above will need to contact the Australian Medical Council or the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners overseas assessment team to determine whether or not they are eligible for medical registration as a general practitioner in Canberra, ACT at this time.  Alternatively you can apply directly to AHPRA through the Standard Pathway (results in limited or general registration).

IMPORTANT: If you hold permanent residency but do not have Fellowship or Fellowship ad eundum gradum from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), you are not eligible for a medicare provider number and will not be able to work in Canberra. If you are a temporary resident, this rule does not apply.
