Canberra Hosts GP Convention

06 September 2011

ACT Medicare Local welcomes over 540 GP educators, supervisors, registrars, junior doctors, medical students and training providers from around the nation to Canberra for the General Practice Education and Training (GPET) Convention.

ACT Medicare Local Chair Dr Rashmi Sharma said many local GPs will be involved with the Convention.

“It is pleasing GPET is being held in Canberra this year and many local GPs will be presenting at and attending the Convention,” said Dr Sharma.

Local GPs Dr Katrina Anderson and Dr Tuck Meng Soo are joining with Bega GP, Dr Duncan Mackinnon to run a workshop for GP supervisors on “Shared models of supervision within vertically integrated general practices”.

The workshop will highlight different vertical integration teaching models and then discuss a variety of case studies. Dr Soo explained his practice, Interchange General Practice, implements a vertical integration teaching model.

“At my practice we share the supervision workload and integrate teaching for all levels from medical students to registrars,” said Dr Soo.

Locally, general practices work in partnership with Australian National University (ANU) and Coast City Country General Practice Training (CCCGPT) to provide high quality education to general practice trainees and medical students.

Local GP Dr Rashmi Sharma and RN Jenny Permezel will present a session on “Realising the potential of practice nurses as teachers of GP registrars”.

“In the past, the teaching role provided by the practice nurse (PN) has been undervalued and under recognised. So to support PN to standardise the way they teach GP registrars, we have produced resources that can be used in a general practice setting to assist PN to teach GP registrars,” said Jenny Permezel.

The national GPET Convention will be held 7 – 8 September 2011 at the National Convention Centre. For more information see www.agpt.com.au
