Local nurses honoured for dedication

12 May 2011

Today on International Nurses Day, ACT Division of General Practice (ACTDGP) and the local community honour a special team of local nurses who have won the General Practice Nurse Excellence Award, sponsored by ACTDGP.

The team of Practice Nurses from Isabella Plains Medical Centre graciously received the award from ACTDGP President Dr Rashmi Sharma at the 2011 Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards held last night at Rydges Lakeside.

“We acknowledge the dedication shown to their patients by the Practice Nurse team at Isabella Plains Medical Centre. They were nominated because they have made such a significant positive contribution to the lives of their patients,” said Dr Sharma.

There are 119 nurses working in general practice throughout the ACT.

“Practice Nurses are a real asset to general practice as they support GPs by providing services such as immunisation, health assessments and chronic disease management".

“Studies have determined that GPs and nurses that establish efficient working relationships enhance the quality of patient care. In fact, having a Practice Nurse in general practice can result in reduced patient waiting times,” said Dr Sharma.

The ACTDGP Nursing in General Practice Program provides ongoing education, networking and peer support opportunities to enhance practice nurse skills and knowledge.

The 2011 Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Award celebration was sponsored by the ACT Council for Nurses and Midwives and the ACT Chief Nurse.
