Reduce your risk of diabetes

11 July 2011

During National Diabetes Awareness Week (10 - 16 July 2011), ACT Division of General Practice (ACTDGP) is encouraging Canberrans to see their local family doctor if they suspect they may be at risk for Type 2 diabetes.

ACTDGP President Dr Rashmi Sharma said GPs can help patients about how to reduce their risk of developing diabetes as well as diagnosing and treating the condition.

"There are now more than 13,000 Canberrans diagnosed with diabetes. However, a similar number have diabetes but do not know it yet," Dr Sharma said.

Diabetes is the world's fastest growing chronic disease and it has no cure. Undiagnosed or poorly managed diabetes can lead to serious health problems.

"Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include family history, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol and excess weight," Dr Sharma said.

"Complications from Type 2 diabetes can impact on the heart, kidneys, eyes, nervous system and circulation yet it remains one of the most preventable chronic diseases. However, if diabetes is diagnosed early and managed well the risk of associated complications is greatly reduced," Dr Sharma said.

Canberrans aged between 40 and 49 found to be at a high risk of Type 2 diabetes can be referred to ACTDGP's subsidised Lifestyle Modification program (LMP) by their local GP. A LMP helps patients to improve their current diet and exercise regime through group education programs, and can also help with quitting smoking.

Diabetes is commonly related to lifestyle factors, therefore programs such as LMP can help prevent or delay the onsest of diabetes.

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include:

  • excessive thirst and urination
  • fatigue
  • irritability
  • blurred vision
  • tingling or numbness in the feet
  • no symptoms

Sometimes people with diabetes feel no symptoms, so Canberrans are urged to see their GP if they suspect they may have or be at risk of getting diabetes.
