Program outline:
Dealing with Adolescent Depression is an interactive 6-hour program that aims to help general practitioners develop confidence in relating to teenagers, understanding their issues and distinguishing those who are experiencing normal adolescent difficulties from those with a clinical mood disorder.
Using case studies as the learning platform, the program details risk assessment in adolescence, comprehensive management planning and the considerations involved in prescribing medication for this specific population.
Learning objectives:
1. Incorporate specific adolescent friendly practices both within a consultation and at a practice level
2. Distinguish the changes inherent to adolescence from presentations of adolescent depression
3. Undertake a comprehensive risk assessment including risk of suicide, self harm and risk taking behaviours for every adolescent presenting with psychological distress.
4. Adopt a multifaceted approach to the management of adolescent depression suited to the wider context of the adolescent
5. Define the role of pharmacological treatment in adolescent depression using a risk benefit approach to prescribing.
